Organization
The National Institute of Statistics (NIS), which is part of the Ministry of Planning, is the focal point on statistical matters in Cambodia. The NIS compiles and consolidates statistics provided by decentralized offices and also collects primary data through household and establishment surveys and population censuses. The Asian Development Bank, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and the World Bank have been providing technical assistance to the NIS for the past fourteen years.
Cambodia has a decentralized statistical structure. There are statistical bureaus and sections within planning and statistics departments of the various Ministries and in the planning and statistical units in the provinces and districts.
The NIS is headed by a Director who is assisted by Deputy Directors. It has four Departments:
The NIS has a total staff strength of 250 distributed amongst the four Departments. There are about 175 statistical staff at the provincial and municipal level and 300 statistical staff at the district level.
The upgrading of staff skills through training both in-country and in international institutions, the establishment of in-house data processing capacity, the collection of primary data through the 1998 Population Census and various surveys, and the increased capacity to serve the needs of data users have in the recent past greatly contributed to enhancing the role of NIS in the statistical system of Cambodia.
Data User's Service Centre
Data User's Service Centre (DUSC) offers you a wide variety of data on Cambodia’s population and related socio-economic indicators like population size, age-sex composition, fertility, mortality, migration, population density, household structure, labour force, housing and household amenities and other demographic and health characteristics. These data will be useful to anyone interested in Cambodia's development, demographic analysis, market research, making investment in Cambodia and more.
DUSC is a non-profit data service system built in the National Institute of Statistics of the Ministry of Planning with the assistance of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). It aims at systematically disseminating Cambodia’s population data. Through DUSC, all data users within and outside Cambodia can have easy access to almost any population data available in Cambodia.
DUSC is ready to serve you with data from population census or sample surveys in Cambodia through various publications and data sheets both in Khmer and English, and through electronic media (e.g. on a CD-ROM).
